Southern Athletics League – Perivale – Sat 20 Apr 2013

ESM’s track season got off to the best possible start with a win for the senior team in their opening Division 3 North fixture at Perivale Park. With a clear blue sky all afternoon, conditions were near perfect for the athletes and there were many fine performances both on the track and in the field.

In the men’s track events there were A string victories for Mo Hashi in the 800m, Jamie Taylor-Caldwell in the 1500m and Symon Swigon in the 110m hurdles. Mark Cameron, Chris Hepworth and Matt Clampin all enjoyed B string wins. In other track events, Charles D’eca, Alex McCluskey, D’yon Christopher, Jon Ellis and James Steel were all making their debut for the team.

For the women, Kat Mertens made a very promising debut with wins in both the 400m and 800m. Shim Amin in the 400m hurdles was the other A string winner. Kamilla Bykovaite in the sprints, Sarah Gerrie in the 1500m and Grazina Narviliene in the 3000m were also making their track debut for the team.

In the field, there were double wins in both men’s and women’s hammer events with Raf Morawski and Debbie McCaw both producing good early season performances to win man of the match and woman of the match. Although not fully recovered from the injury that caused her to miss all of last year, Debbie was also able to grab a win in the shot.

Nigel Bourne had a good win in the men’s long jump and in the women’s jumps Emma Gayler and Helen Leadbetter combined well to earn good points for the team.

In the relays, all four of our teams got the baton around safely and crossed the line first to help increase the team’s margin of victory. There was even a non-scoring ESM team in the 4x400m relay. Splits for all the runners as follows:

ESM women: Djeeneigh Kaczorowski 74.2, Helen Leadbetter 69.5, Shim Amin 70.2, Kat Mertens 66.0

ESM men: Mo Hashi 57.3, Chris Hepworth 52.3, Nicholas Landeau 52.1, Ben Waterman 50.8

ESM men (non-scoring): Jamie Taylor-Caldwell 55.6, Mark Cameron 57.8, Luke Nicholas 57.4, Angelo John 56.9
