National Road Relays – Birmingham – Sun 14 Apr 2013

Two teams of ESM young athletes took part in the National Road Relay
Competition at Sutton Park, Birmingham, on Sunday. The races had been
postponed from last October. Flying the flag for the Club were the two
under 13 teams.

Conditions were windy but dry, Spring having finally arrived in honour of the event. The boys team came in 13th out of nearly 50 teams. Hassan Ismael, running his first major race, ran a very impressive first leg, handing over in 7th place; George Kerry was next up & ran strongly, though could not quite maintain Hassan’s position: George handed over to John Fielding, who ran well but also could not quite maintain the strong opening placing. The team’s final standing of 13th place was still one of the best results for ESM’s boys in this age group for some time. Hassan recorded the 14th fastest lap in this age group.

The girls also impressed. Despite the absence of two of ESM’s stronger runners in this age group the girls put in a fine performance, finishing 36th, also out of nearly 50 teams. Laura Stewart, continuing her recent dramatic improvement in form led the team out, handing over in 21st position; Maryam Hussain, who has another year in this age group, ran solidly & well; last up was Roisin Lynch with another strong run to bring the team home.
