Southern Athletics League – Perivale – Sat 02 Aug 2014

We finished second in the last Southern Athletics League match of the season at Perivale. This left us comfortably in the middle of Division 2 North in our first season after promotion.

Our women led the way, both in terms of winning their events (11 vs 4) and their overall points tally (88 vs 78). On the track, Eldika Edwards and Tabita Botuli produced their by-now customary double win in the A and B legs of the 100m and 200m sprints. Eldika produced a PB in the 200m while Tabita’s 100m was a season’s best. There were PBs too in the 400m for Kat Mertens and Nikki Shelley, while Kat won the 800m, her main event. Walk specialist Grazina Narviliene managed a PB in the 3000m, while the sprinters rounded off the afternoon’s track events nicely with a win and season’s best in the 4 x 100m relay.

In the field, the throwers were also on form. U17 Yasmine Ferguson won the shot, despite throwing with a heavier implement than usual, while Debbie McCaw won the B string. Siobhan Drummond won the discus with a PB, while Jasmine notched up another victory in the B string. Tracey Gould won the hammer.

In the men’s sprints, Sean Buckeridge ran a season’s best in the 100m while Reuben Fleary ran a PB in the B race. Reuben went on to achieve a second PB when winning the 200m B race. In the longer distances, Jamie Taylor-Caldwell won the 1500m B, while Steve Elson ran his fastest 5000m to date. Hurdles specialist Szymon Swigon is more comfortable over the 400m hurdles, but he won the 110mH with a PB. Szymon deserves a special mention for his team spirit, competing in five different events in the course of the afternoon. Luke Nicholas, supporting Szymon in the 400mH, achieved a PB both in that and in the 2000m steeplechase. The men were also able to celebrate a relay victory as the match drew to a close, in their case the 4 x 400m.
