We enjoyed a convincing victory in the test match for the proposed new Middlesex Young Athletes League, held at the Allianz stadium last Sunday, and against some very strong clubs. We had a good turnout, though that alone did not explain the good score – indeed many of our young athletes were attempting events for the first time.
Phoenix Lyon was the only U17 man, and was not seriously challenged in either the 100m or the 200m. There were seven U15 boys, and they accounted for a large chunk of the points, winning many of their events. Kai Thomas and Joshua Jones paired up for the sprints (see photo below), with novice Miles Bernadine running as a non-scorer. Kai came second in the 100m A and won the 200m B. Conversely, Joshua won the 100m A and came second in the B, achieving personal bests in both. The sprinters went on to win the relay, while Sudeys Hersi and Louis Rodericks won the 1500m A and B respectively. In the field, Kai English won the discus and matched his PB in the high jump, while Kirk Lebdiri won the B strings with PBs in both. Mikey Kouwiloyan won the shot putt A string with a PB and competed for the first time in the long jump. Louis Rodericks teamed up with Mikey for his first shot putt. For the U13 boys, Zack Clarke-Green and Najiib Hersi covered the sprints. It was a debut at 100m for both of them, but they both won their 200m races, Zack with a PB. Zack competed in the long jump for the first time, while Najiib partnered older brother Mahiis in the 1500m. Najiib’s PB came in the 75m hurdles.
The four U17 women also notched up a good points tally. Middle distance specialist Laura Stewart supported Amber Henry in the sprints, racing over 100m for the first time. Laura also tackled the sprint hurdles for a change, as the programme did not include the longer event. Roisin Lynch joined her in the hurdles, winning the B race. Roisin also competed over 800m and won the long jump. Throws specialist Zoya Styles threw a PB in the discus and also tackled the shot putt.U15 Maya Faulkner competed in the 100m, 200m and long jump. Estelle Belgrave supported her in the sprints – her first competitive attempt at 100m – whilst also running the 75m hurdles.U11s Ashana McClunie and Nicole Smith were track and field novices, competing over 100m, 800 and long jump. Both showed great pace judgement over the 800m, picking up places in the second part of the race, with Nicole (pictured above) enjoying an emphatic victory. In the long jump, Ashana jumped further, though Nicole won the B string. Thanks to Laura Stewart for the photos.
