Last Sunday saw the first fixture of the Winter season, writes Tim Hannah, with the Middlesex Young Athletes’ Road Relays held once again at Minet Park, Hayes. A proper chilly and windy autumn day in this desolate part of West London saw our Ealing athletes come away with medals from three races.
The programme kicked off with a straight race for the U11s, over one lap of the 1500m course. Our Alec Edgar got things off to a fine start with an impressive fourth. He was unlucky not to get a medal, in a tight finish that saw him awarded the same time as the third-placed athlete.
We did not have a team of U13 girls, but the U13 boys ‘A’ team showed their class, winning their relay race over three legs of 3,000m each. Finn Combe, Najiib Hersi and Mohamed Ibrahim collected gold medals, winning in a time of 33:29, the fastest team time clocked by ESM’s young athletes. We have such a rich vein of U13 boys that we had a ‘B’ team of Louis Saint, Thomas Edgar and Otto Lawrence, who finished ninth in a time of 39:16.
Our U15 girls saw Fiona Coutts, Katie Hay and Anna Ilchenko come home eighth in a time of 40:41. Lauren Beale also ran a first leg by herself in a time of 15:16. The U15 boys’ team of Arun Manget, Matteo Lamagna and new member Vitaly Bender came sixth in 35:23.
Both our U17 teams won medals. Bronze for the women with Lucy O’Brien, new member Angel Grimes-McTavish and Anisa Ibrahim in a time of 36:03. Silver for Chauncey Edwards, Kai English and Kirk Lebdiri, who finished in a time of 36:00.
