Middlesex Young Athletes League – Perivale – Sat 27 Apr 2019

U11 Alfie Kurylo

One week after a gloriously sunny and mild Easter weekend, the first MYAL match of the season took place on a chilly, windy afternoon which tested the mettle of the officials as well as the athletes. It was also the same weekend as the London Mini Marathon and the Youth Development League…

It’s perhaps surprising, then, to learn that it was the second best attended match of the League to date! There were 667 different performances by 332 competitors. No wonder the track looked like Piccadilly Circus at times, while Carole and her team were rushed off their feet at the refreshments counter.

No less than 52 Under 13 girls sprinted round the 200m, making it the busiest event the League has yet experienced. And 32 Under 13 girls leapt into the long jump pit, which makes that the most-attended field event so far. The stopwatches and tape measures were red-hot!

ESM fielded 38 of those athletes – a few more than last year – and finished sixth in the table. This doesn’t tell the whole story though, as we didn’t field an Under 17 squad. (They had their YDL match the next day, though stalwart Arun Manget did run in the 1500m). We scored very well in the younger age groups: our Under 15 boys were ranked second and our Under 15 girls third; our Under 11 boys also finished second.

Team Manager Bridie was impressed with the new crop of Under 11s: “Not really knowing their pedigree meant that some non scorers ran, jumped and threw further than the scoring athletes. Although we may have lost points it didn’t matter too much. At this age it is all about trying new events and enjoying the competition. Annick did a fine job ensuring the new U11s got to their events on time”.

There are a few more photos on our Facebook page. The next match is at Finsbury Park on Saturday 25th May. This fixture has had a massive turnout the last couple of years, so don’t miss out on what will be an action-packed afternoon. You can find a full timetable on the MYAL website.
