ESM Young Athlete Achievements

Graham French writes about the club’s recent young athlete achievements.

An event was recently held at Perivale track where ESM’s young athletes received trophies & medals following an excellent 2021/22 cross country season .

The awards were made by club president Nigel Small.

In total 54 young athletes in the under 11 to under 17 categories took part in the cross country season (60 including under 20s).

Our younger athletes blazed a trail over the season. In the North West London League (13 clubs), the under 11 boys won their age group, the under 13 boys came 2nd, & the under 13 girls 3rd.. The boys came 2nd overall (under 11,13,15 & 17 age groups combined). The girls came 5th overall.

In the Met league (20 clubs) the under 11 boys also won convincingly, with Jack Hayward taking individual first place.

In the Middlesex County championship, both under 11 boys & girls won their team events, with individual medals for Jack (1st), Marcus Muers (3rd), & silver for Violet Muralihar. Our overall turnout & medal/trophy haul in the Middlesex championship was the best in over a decade – especially impressive as we have still not fully emerged from the pandemic. It may be, however, that some of the more inventive training sessions that were necessitated during parts of the pandemic, & the fostering of team spirit, in fact had a beneficial effect.

The next season starts at the end of September, preceded by road relays on the 11 September.
