ESM members and guests are invited to take part in the club’s annual Yacht Handicap – more info below – which takes place this year on Monday 2nd September. It’s free to enter and you don’t need to register in advance, but it’s helpful to let John know if you plan to come, so that he can calculate your handicap. Either click “going” on the event page of the ESM Facebook Group or email john@esm.org.uk.

What’s it all about: The idea is borrowed from the world of sailing and is designed to allow runners of differing speeds to race each other. The race director estimates how long everyone will take to run the course, based on their recent form over 5k. Runners are set off in 15 second intervals, in order of speed, with the slowest first. If the estimates are accurate, everyone should – in theory – cross the line at the same time. The first male and female to cross the line get their names engraved on a very large and prestigious-looking trophy.
I’m injured/don’t want to race that day: Please come along to marshal and/or offer support, for the benefit of newer members who don’t know the route.
Past results:
2002 – chaos on the course, as not everyone ran the same distance!!
… more to follow when I locate them!!
