YDL Upper – Bournemouth – Sun 26 June 2016

A small squad of just sixteen ESM U17/U20 athletes travelled to Bournemouth for the third YDL match, but they managed to win nineteen events. Conditions were mixed and it was quite cool by the afternoon but there were also eleven personal best performances.

All four U20 men competing in the 100m came home with a PB: Tom Sanders, Kamau Muhammad, Ash Conteh and Vaughan Rhule, with Ash ducking under 12 seconds for the first time. Tom won the 200m A race while Ash won a close-run B race with another PB. Will Lord was close to his best in winning the 400m A, while Ash tackled the B with his first 400m. It was a track and field debut for Zac Wingate-Denys, but he pulled out good performances in the 800m and 1500m and took maximum points in the discus. Kamau won the hammer and the shot putt B, while Vaughan won the shot putt A. It was business as usual in the triple and long jump events for Joel Wynter, who added to his impressive list of victories in this League.

In the younger age group, U17 Luke Miller continued his great season in the javelin. His best throw of over 53 metres was 10 metres further than anyone else. John Fielding achieved a 1500m PB, while Phoenix Lyon won the 100m.

The men finished their afternoon in fine style by winning both relays. In both cases, it was a combined U17/U20 quartet, the sprint relay being run in a fairly swift time.

For the U20 women, Besirat Tesfu (pictured) went over 5 metres for the first time in the long jump, while Kamile Bykovaite won the B string. U17 Laura Stewart achieved PBs in the 200m and 300m flat races and won the 300m hurdles. Roisin Lynch won the 300m hurdles B race with a PB and also won the high jump and triple jump. Sprinter Amber Henry improved her previous best considerably in her first 100m of the season.

The next match is in Portsmouth on Sunday 24th July.
