The 2nd Middx Young Athletes League match was conducted in the same format as the 1st one – ie it was held over 2 days due to COVID restrictions. Field events took place at Perivale on Saturday & Track Events at Finsbury Park on Sunday.
ESM were quite low on numbers, especially on the track, and finished the match in 4th place.
Some of the more notable performances for the Girls included Elizabeth Boissiere who set 2 U13G MYAL records with some impressive throwing: 8.01m in the Shot Put and 23.03m in the Discus.
ESM also secured good points in the Girls High Jump competitions. Leila Newth claimed U13G 1st place with 1.25m, Flora Allan U15G 1st place with 1.30m and Zairah Newth 2nd with 1.20m. Finally, Katharine Boissiere cleared 1.40m to finish 3rd in the U17W.
Our other top 3 female finishers were Esinam Asima (U13G 100m – 13.9), Lucy Henson (U17W 1500m – 5:11.69) and Josie Booker (U17W Long Jump – 4.40m, Shot Put – 9.44m).
ESM’s Boys team was even lower in numbers than the Girls. We had no overall winners but managed 3 2nd places: Zack Clarke-Green (U17M 100m – 11.37, 200m – 23.19) and Gus Carter (U17M Discus – 18.24m).
Other performances to note were 10 year old Jack Hayward competing as an U13 in the 1500m with a time of 5:31.23. We also saw a strong performance in the same race from Sam Sunderland who finished in 5:26.83 & Mika Stripp close behind with 5:32.68. Isaac Mezey was our 1st U15B home in the 1500m in 5:11.89.
Match 3: 26 June 2021
Parliament Hill saw us finally having a match where all events were held on one day, plus finally we could offer our U11s their own events.
Again our numbers were hit by exams and COVID and we finished this match once again in 4th.
Our U11 Girls consisted of just 2 athletes: Gabriella Bryce competed admirably in the 75m and long jump. Sienna Kurylo-Nicholson also ran the 75m then charged over to compete in the vortex which she won with a throw of 17.11m.
ESM’s U11B team of 3 secured 1st & 3rd place in the 600m – Jack Hayward narrowly beating Oskar Parker with times of 1:57.49 and 2:00.31. Oskar took the honours over Jack in the vortex and Ronnie Sunderland brought home valuable points in the 75m and Long Jump.
Other top 3 finishers were:
Leila Newth (U13G – 3rd 70m hurdles), Alfie Kurylo (U13B – 1st Javelin & 3rd Long Jump), Elizabeth Boissiere (U13G – 1st Shot Put & 2nd Javelin), Rosie Hewitt (U15G – 2nd Shot Put), Flora Allan (U15G – 2nd Long Jump & 2nd 200m), Rory Johnston (U15B – 2nd 300m), Flora Allan (U15G – 2nd Long Jump & 300m).
A special mention to U15B Kevin Prempeh who ended up running 800m, 300m & Long Jumping with almost no rest in between.
Match 4: 18 July 2021
And so to the final meet which was held on a scorching hot day at the Stone X Stadium in Barnet.
Currently sitting in 4th place in the league we knew that with a big turn out and lots of participation in the field events, 3rd place was within our grasp. And so it was – we clinched 3rd place above Highgate by 157 points to 144.
The U11s kick started the day and it was lovely to see green and yellow finishing 1st and 2nd in both the A/B 800m race (Jack Hayward & Oskar Parker) followed by 1st and 2nd in the non-scoring 800m race (Marcus Muers & Jack Jones). Jack Hayward also took maximum points in the vortex by launching it a massive 29.0m.
The heat did affect some performances, especially in the endurance events, but we still saw a couple of determined performances in the U13B 1500m from Mika Stripp (5:22.13) taking 10 seconds off his PB and Elliot Edgar (5:25.85) getting sub 5:30 in his 1st 1500m race. We had strong and gutsy performances too from U15B Ed Flewitt (4:45.65) and Alec Edgar (5:01.29).
Other top performances on the day included U13G Elizabeth Boissiere once again topping both the throws (1st in Shot Put and Discus) and Leila Newth clearing 1.30m for a new PB and 1st place in the U13G High Jump. U17 Zack Clarke-Green was the fastest man over 100m all day and Gus Carter took the honours in the Discus. Well done too to Laurence Bryce who came 2nd in the U13B Shot Put after only 1 or 2 lessons.
The special mention from today’s match goes to U15 Antonina Lotasz. After only a few weeks at the club and never having competed before, she stepped up and ran 100m, competed in the High Jump and 75m hurdles. Finally, thank you to everyone who stayed to run a leg in one of the relays. Green and yellow seemed to dominate at the end of the day, and although we didn’t win any we did win lots of valuable points.
It’s not been possible to mention each and everyone of our amazing junior team – but they have all been brilliant this year and really are a fantastic group of young athletes.
