Honouring Mani Pillai: A Coach Who Inspires Beyond the Track

Report by Armen Kanikanian
Recognised for his years of service and dedication, former ESM coach Mani Pillai continues to make a difference through sport and community work.
Former ESM sprint coach Manicon “Mani” Pillai has long been known for his dedication, patience, and passion for helping athletes reach their full potential. For many years, he worked closely with Tim Hannah, coaching sprinters and contributing greatly to the club’s development on and off the track.
But Mani’s commitment to helping others extends far beyond ESM. A trained paramedic, he has selflessly offered his medical expertise at local races such as the Perivale 5, where he could often be seen in uniform alongside his ambulance support team, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of runners.
More recently, Mani has been volunteering his time with London Youth Games, coaching disabled and special needs athletes in athletics and the Paralympic sport of Boccia. He has also taken part in summer sporting events such as the Big Mile End Tournament, and spends his Saturdays coaching disabled and wheelchair tennis players at Hackney Downs Tennis Club during term time.

His commitment and passion for creating opportunities for every athlete, regardless of ability, have now been recognised at the highest level. On 22 October 2025, at a special London Youth Games ceremony held at the historic Guildhall in central London, Mani was awarded the Inclusive Coach of the Year Award.
Mani’s years of service have left a lasting mark on the club and all those he coached. ESM thanks him sincerely for his invaluable contribution and sends heartfelt congratulations on this outstanding achievement.
