Saturday May 20th saw the second match of the new Middlesex Youth Development League at Finsbury Park for our younger athletes, writes Tim Hannah. Very mixed weather meant that we went from warm sunshine one moment to heavy rainstorms the next. Highgate won again with the home club London Heathside in second place, but our athletes managed to cope too, and finished up in third place out of nine clubs for the second match running. This is a tremendous advance after disappointment last year when we finished last in every fixture.
The league certainly lived up to its youth development aim with hundreds of young athletes competing, many for the first time. There were so many athletes that many extra non-scoring races had to be laid on, which did delay proceedings. (Around 691 individual performances were recorded at the match – nearly 40% more than at Perivale. Hats off to the officials for all that timing and measuring, and to the team managers for getting the athletes to the right place at the right time!!)

ESM athletes scored a total of 599.5 points. We had seven event winners: Emily Nicholson-Stanwix jump of 4.29m won the U17 women’s long jump. Andrew Woodward won the U15 boys’ shot with a throw of 11.33m. For the U13 boys, Zack Clarke-Green won the 100m in a time of 13.9 seconds and Jonah Mezey won the high jump with 1.05m. Nathaniel Wright won the U11 boys’ shot with a putt of 5.90m.
Apart from these winners, every athlete wearing green and yellow performed well in testing conditions. We had many second and third places and fielded our largest ever team in this age group.
Next match for this age group is at Parliament Hill Fields on Sunday June 18th.
