Written by Pat Cornell
A group of ESM athletes represented Middlesex in the South of England Inter Counties Championships in Oxford on Saturday. Gus Carter got the county team off to a flying start in the 400m hurdles. He was first out of the blocks and increased his lead steadily to win the race comfortably in 55.59, his best time of the season in spite of having to battle against a very strong wind. In the hammer, Joanne John was close to 50m once again, taking 2nd place with 49.03. Also in 2nd place was Khalil Douma-Bouthiba in the triple jump with his first round jump of 12.43. In the long jump, Chiamaka Nnaji finished 4th with a personal best of 5.30. On Sunday, a small group of sprinters brought their season to an end in the Stratford Speed Grand Prix 100m races. Connor Chung was fast out of the blocks and held on well throughout his race to win in a personal best time of 11.14. Sion Jones took the lead after about 20m and pulled away to win in a personal best of 11.47. Also winning his race was Shomari Johnson in a very tight finish in 11.79 into one of the only headwinds of the day. Veteran Chris Burbidge finished 3rd in his race, finishing strongly for a time of 12.86.
